Kistler Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay

Founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler, Kistler Vineyards helped establish California Chardonnay as one of the world's great expressions of the grape. Today, winemaker Jason Kesner continues the estate's commitment to distinctive vineyard sites, heritage Chardonnay selections and a restrained approach that allows each vineyard's character to emerge. The Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay offers a particularly compelling introduction to this philosophy, combining the richness of mountain-grown fruit with the freshness and precision that define Kistler's finest wines.

The 2024 comes from select blocks of McCrea Vineyard, which Kistler has farmed since the 1980s. While portions of McCrea contain lighter, silica-based soils, the Sonoma Mountain blocks are distinguished by their reddish volcanic soils, which contribute a broader texture and generous fruit character. The 2024 growing season brought favorable conditions and a smooth harvest, producing fruit with excellent concentration and naturally lively acidity. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, followed by ten months of maturation in 38% new oak. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural texture and complexity.

The result is a beautifully expressive Chardonnay with aromas of ripe pear, lemon zest, white peach and citrus blossom, complemented by toasted hazelnut, delicate spice and subtle mineral notes. The palate is generous yet focused, with a creamy texture balanced by refreshing acidity and a long, elegant finish. We selected this wine because it demonstrates why Kistler remains one of California's benchmark Chardonnay producers. Its combination of vineyard character, thoughtful winemaking and immediate drinking appeal makes it an outstanding choice for anyone who appreciates Chardonnay with both richness and restraint.
