Hyde de Villaine, known as HdV, brings together two extraordinary winegrowing families: the Hydes of Napa Valley and the de Villaines of Burgundy. Founded through the partnership of Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine, the estate combines the distinctive character of California's celebrated Hyde Vineyard with a winemaking philosophy focused on elegance, restraint and a faithful expression of place. Its Chardonnay has become a benchmark for sophisticated, vineyard-driven California white wine, prized for its balance of concentration, freshness and mineral precision.
The 2023 Chardonnay comes from the oldest Chardonnay blocks at Hyde Vineyard in Carneros, where the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay creates a long growing season and preserves natural acidity. The wine draws on two distinctive Chardonnay selections, Old Wente and Calera, each contributing different qualities. Old Wente brings aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity, while Calera contributes stone fruit, texture and mineral character. Following a cool, extended 2023 growing season, the wine was carefully fermented and matured in a combination of French oak and stainless steel. The estate's restrained use of new oak allows the fruit and vineyard character to remain at the center of the wine.
The result is a Chardonnay of remarkable clarity and sophistication. Aromas of lemon blossom, yellow apple, ripe pear and white peach mingle with crushed stone, toasted almond and subtle smoky notes. The palate is beautifully textured yet energetic, with vibrant citrus acidity, a distinctive saline quality and exceptional length. We selected this wine because it demonstrates the extraordinary potential of California Chardonnay when exceptional vineyards meet thoughtful winemaking.
