Chateau Phelan Segur, St. Estephe
A historic Saint-Estèphe estate delivering classified-growth character without the classified-growth price.
Château Phélan Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe's most respected estates, with a history dating to the early nineteenth century when Irish-born Bernard Phelan brought together two vineyard properties overlooking the Gironde estuary. Although the château was never included in the famous 1855 classification, it has long produced wines capable of standing alongside many classified growths. Its vineyards occupy the deep gravel and clay soils of northern Bordeaux, where Cabernet Sauvignon develops structure and aromatic complexity while Merlot contributes richness and texture.
The 2018 marks an important chapter in the estate's history, as it was the first vintage under Belgian entrepreneur Philippe Van de Vyvere, who acquired the property in 2017. The growing season was challenging early, with significant rainfall and mildew pressure, before a warm, dry summer and favorable September conditions delivered beautifully ripe fruit. The final blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot, with 14% alcohol. The estate's clay-gravel soils helped preserve moisture through the summer, allowing the fruit to develop concentration without sacrificing freshness.
The resulting wine is rich and beautifully structured, with blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry layered with graphite, licorice, tobacco and subtle earthy notes. Its tannins are substantial but polished, giving the wine the muscular character Saint-Estèphe is known for while retaining remarkable elegance. James Suckling awarded it 95 points, and Antonio Galloni of Vinous gave it 94, praising its finesse, depth and personality.
We selected the 2018 because Phélan Ségur represents one of Bordeaux's most compelling alternatives to the increasingly expensive classified growths. It offers the pedigree of a historic estate, the concentration of an excellent vintage and the structure to develop for decades. Now entering its recommended drinking window, it is a serious Saint-Estèphe that delivers both immediate pleasure and genuine cellar potential.
